The National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI) today added its voice to the 'Voices for a No Vote' Press Conference in the Shelbourne Hotel. More than 45 groups, some representing scores of other organisations and individuals, came together to remind the public what the real issues are in the up-coming Citizenship Referendum.
The NWCI, represented by their Director, Dr Joanna McMinn, united with the many other voices of civil society, calling for a No Vote.
Dr McMinn welcomed the comments made by Inez McCormack, the first women President of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and a former member of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. Ms McCormack expressed her shock at the manner in which this Referendum has been brought about, and in particular the way in which it is focusing on and demonising women
The NWCI , which launched its own 'Vote No' campaign last week sent a clear message to the Government; that women and children will not be scapegoated in this Referendum. Dr McMinn reiterated; ''This referendum has sent out an irresponsible message at the expense of women and children and we are calling on all women to Vote No on June 11TH .
