The Domestic Workers Action Group and the MRCI have welcomed the decision by the National Employment Rights Authority (NERA) to begin a targeted campaign of inspections to protect the rights of people employed as domestic workers in the private home. It is a significant victory for the Domestic Workers Action Group, who have been campaigning for better protections since 2003 and actively calling on NERA to begin inspections in the domestic work sector for the last 18 months.
The NERA initiative for domestic workers formally recognises that the private home can also be a workplace and that domestic workers deserve to have their rights protected and enforced. It sends out a clear message to employers that the exploitation of domestic workers will not be tolerated in Ireland.
