Dublin City Council supports Act Now campaign

Thanks to the support from SIPTU and Dublin City Council, the ActNow campaign has been able to spread its core messages on a 15 metre high banner in the city centre.

Dublin City Council notes that

1. World leaders, including the then Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern T.D. acting on behalf of the Government of Ireland, agreed at a landmark summit in the year 2000 in New York to eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG's) aimed at tackling poverty and hunger throughout the world.

2. Most of these MDG's are to be attained by 2015.

3. World leaders will gather in New York from 20th September, 2010 to review progress and to recommit their countries to the achievement of the MDG's.

4. The Government of Ireland, in common with the pre-enlargement member states of the European Union, has committed itself to increase spending on overseas development to 0.7% of GNI (Gross national income) by 2015.

5. Irish NGO's (non-governmental organisations) active in overseas development and the umbrella body which represents them, Dochas, are currently seeking to increase public awareness of the MDG's and Ireland's commitment.

Accordingly, Council resolves to support the Government's commitment on ODA and further resolves to support Irish NGO's in their public awareness campaign.
