Event Notice: Female Smokers Under-35 Targeted by New Irish Cancer Society Campaign

DATE: Monday 20th February

TIME: 11.30am-12.30pm

SUBJECT: 'I'll Quit When I'm 30' Campaign Launch

LOCATION: Irish Cancer Society, 43-45 Northumberland Road, Dublin 4
On Monday 20th February at 11.30am, the Irish Cancer Society will launch its first major advertising campaign aimed specifically at reducing the number of young women who smoke. The campaign will be launched by a panel of ex-smokers including Grace Batterberry from RTÉ's Operation Transformation.

The Irish Cancer Society is concerned with the high level of female smokers under-35, particularly in disadvantaged groups and at the growing number of tobacco related diseases in women. Fifty-six per cent of disadvantaged women aged between 18 and 29 years of age smoke, which is double the rate of their peers in non-disadvantaged groups.

The 'I'll Quit When I'm 30' advertisements will target young women who set dates to quit but find it difficult to stick to their quit date. The Irish Cancer Society is encouraging women to pick their quit date and plan, prepare and get help in advance so that they can take control of their lives, their health and their looks.
Speaking at the launch will be:

  • Ms Kathleen O'Meara, Head of Advocacy and Communications, Irish Cancer Society
  • Ms Norma Cronin, Health Promotion Manager, Irish Cancer Society
  • Ms Grace Batterberry, Operation Transformation
  • Ms Avril O'Sullivan, Former smoker
  • Ms Lisa Kiernan, Former smoker
