International Women’s Day with NWC

NWC will be celebrating IWD this year with a range of events in parternship with our member ogranisations.

Read on for a flavour of what's happening to mark NWC's 50th IWD!

 

March  – Launch of NWC Postmark 

NWC has created a very special 50th anniversary postmark which launches on February 28th and runs until March 17th. Keep an eye out for the postmark when sending and receiving letters. It will be applied to every standard letter processed through automated sorting technology in all three of the An Post mails centres -  that’s about 1.2 million items every working day! NWC would like to sincerely thank An Post in supporting our Anniversary Postmark.

6th March – It Stops Now Mural installation 

The It Stops Now campaign aims to combat sexual violence and harassment in third-level institutes and calls for collective action to ensure the safety, equality and full participation of every student. NWC and USI will be collaborating on an ItStopsNow mural installation on the NCAD campus on March 6th, meeting at 10am. Students from NCAD and from other colleges around Dublin will be invited to participate on the day. If you're a student and you're free, come and say hey!

 

6th March – National Lottery International Women’s Day Event 

NWC will deliver the keynote address at the National Lottery's International Women's Day event, outlining where Ireland can improve in gender equity and emphasising how we all have a part to play.
 

6th March – Department of Environment, Climate and Communications IWD Event

NWC Director Orla O'Connor will launch a series of events at DECC to celebrate International Women's Day. The theme of the session is gender equality in policy making and Orla will speak about the key role that women play in policy making, and the impact it has when they are not involved at early stages. Orla will also speak about "Building a Feminist Community Work Approach to Climate Change" - the new joint project between NWC and Community Work Ireland.

 

6th March – Women’s Health Panel Discussion, UCC

NWC will be part of a panel discussion for an event that the International Development Society in University College Cork is holding to mark IWD. The event will focus on the Sustainable Development Goal 3 – ‘Good Health and Wellbeing’ with a particular focus on women’s health.

 

6th March – 67th Commission on the Status of Women

CSW67 will take place between the 6th and 17th of March 2023 in New York, and the priority theme is ‘Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.' NWC vice Chairperson Jennifer Okeke will be representing the National Women's Council at an official side event, organised by the Irish Consortium on Gender Based Violence, as well as connecting with the European Women's Lobby, who host the European wide observatory on violence against women.

 

7th March - Women’s Mental Health Network Networking Event

To celebrate International Women’s Day, the Women’s Mental Health Network, which is co-convened by NWC and St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, is holding an online networking session with its members on the 7th of March. Providing a platform to meet other people who have a committed interest in women's mental health issues is a core purpose of the Network. This IWD, we hope this event supports people working with or on behalf of women with mental health difficulties to meet other members of the Network, make new connections and learn about other’s activities and work in the area of women’s mental health. 8th March – 50 Years of Feminism- Irish Times podcast to mark NWC anniversary

To mark International Women’s Day and to celebrate fifty years since the foundation of the National Women’s Council of Ireland, The Irish Times Women’s Podcast is releasing a special episode on March 8th. The conversation explores five decades of Irish women’s struggles and triumphs and examining the challenges and inequalities that remain. Hosted by Róisín Ingle and Kathy Sheridan, guests include Sonya Lennon, Tara Flynn, Dr Salome Mbugua, Suzy Byrne and Orla O’Connor with music from Sharyn Ward. The podcast will be available on the Irish Times website and on all good streaming platforms.

 

8th March – International Women’s Day with AkiDwA

NWC will speak at AkiDwA's conference "Towards Equity: Recognising Migrant Women's skills, Innovation and Maximising their Potential." Discussions of the conference will focus on various subjects which include, innovation, access to employment, civic engagement and political representation while articulating on how to achieve equity for migrant women on these areas.    

 

8th March – International Women's Day Protest with ROSA

NWC are marching with ROSA this International Women's Day. We're demanding an end to violence against women, full representation and participation of women in society, economic equality, proper access to healthcare, and a green future for women. We will meet at 5.30pm at the Spire on Wednesday March 8th. More details here on the event page - come and march with us!

 

8th March – NWC speaking at Empower, Balbriggan 

"Celebrate women’s achievements and Imagine our feminist future”, an event with readings, entertainment and refreshments and a presentation from NWC on women’s equality in Ireland today. This is taking place at Empower, Balbriggan at March 8th. More details here.

 

10th March – Roscommon School presentation

NWC will visit Meánscoil Muire gan Smál in Roscommon to meet the 6th year Political Society students who will present their Active Citizen Project on status of women in Ireland, and how it reflects the status of democracy in the country today.

 

11th March - ICA Spring Conference 

The ICA firmly believes that education is the key to the prevention of gender-based violence. They have invited NWC to speak on how SPHE education in secondary schools can help to achieve gender equality, as part of their afternoon session to mark International Women’s Day.
