News from the Y Factor
Published: Thursday, March 14, 2013
Since the launch of NWCI's youth initiative, The Y Factor, on 1st February, things have been going from strength to strength. There has been a lot of interest expressed by young people in getting involved and volunteering with The Y Factor and we are busy putting together a volunteering strategy to ensure effective use of people's time and talent. If you are interested in volunteering with The Y Factor, contact Elva at elvaoc@nwci.ie
An priority issue that has been identified is access to health information and services by young women. The Y Factor will develop a campaign on this issue over the coming weeks. Stay tuned here, to The Y Factor website, www.yfactor.ie, and follow us on Facebook and on Twitter to find out more. Contact Elva if you would like to get involved.
Work is continuing on our pilot education/discussion programme with schools and youth projects. We have been working with St. Vincent's School in Dundalk, Malahide Community School and Poppintree Youth Project and are about to begin work with Bluebell Youth Project. We are now on the look-out for a rural school and a rural youth project that would like to work together on a discussion programme exploring women's equality issues. To find out more contact Laura Maloney on lauram@nwci.ie or phone 01-8787248.
West Dublin Access Radio and Near 90FM are running accredited Media Expression Training in April for young feminists interested in working in radio and media. The Y Factor is delighted to have been approached by WDAR and some of our Y Factor steering group members and volunteers will participate in the training. Tune into Female Intuition at 96FM (www.wdar.ie) and Near 90FM (www.nearfm.ie) to listen to radio broadcasting with a focus on social and community issues.
Over the coming months, The Y Factor team would like to meet with groups of young feminists or young people who want to take action on gender issues around the country. If there is a group of young people in your community who would like to meet with us, please don't hesitate to get in touch – we'd love to hear from you.
