#NoSmallChange - Gender Pay Gap in the Media and the Arts
Published: Monday, December 11, 2017
NWCI hosted an event on the Gender Pay Gap with a specific focus on the media and arts sectors.Speakers included: Emma O'Kelly, Chair of the National Union of Journalists Dublin Broadcasting Branch; Sarah Durcan, Board Member of the Abbey Theatre, and founding member of Waking the Feminists; Senator Ivana Bacik, Martina Fitzgerald, Political Correspondent for RTÉ; as well as NWCI Director Orla O'Connor and Chair of NWCI board, Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop.
We organised the event in the context of our work on women's economic equality and women in leadership and also as part of our work on the Department of Justice and Equality consultation on the Gender Pay Gap. Orla O’Connor detailed NWCI's submission at the event, entitled "No Small Change."
The recommendations contained in our submission are intended to facilitate the groundwork for change, which we believe must reflect deliberate and explicit reconfiguring of current and future Government policies, in order for the realisation of substantive progress to emerge in the not too distant future.
In particular, we consider transparency around pay a key measure, as it will help remove the question of gender-influenced pay. Legally requiring employers to be open about gender pay differences and to take action to eliminate them is essential if we want to effect immediate change.
The event was livestreamed and can still be viewed on our Facebook page here.
