NWCI hosted an exciting roundtable discussion with Hauwa Ibrahim, Nigerian human rights lawyer and activist, on Thursday June 20th.
Hauwa Ibrahim is a Nigerian human rights lawyer, who has won a number of precedent setting cases before Islamic Shariah Courts. She is perhaps most famous for being a lawyer for Amina Lawal and Safiya Hussaini, both sentenced to death by stoning for having a child outside of marriage. Both sentences were overturned. Ibrahim is currently a visiting lecturer at Harvard University.
She spoke in detail about her new book, Practicing Shariah Law: Seven Strategies for Achieving Justice in Shariah Courts, as well as her hopes for the future for women in her home country.
