Recession negatively affects UK women’s family planning

One quarter of women are postponing pregnancy or opting not to conceive because of the added financial burden, according to a Red Magazine survey published today.
The survey indicates that out of more than 2,500 women between the ages of 30 and 45, one in 10 is delaying pregnancy plans and 15 per cent have chosen not to start a family at all because of the current economic recession.
Almost one quarter of the women surveyed have problems conceiving naturally.
The report also shows that women needing fertility treatments are willing to spend less than they were last year with 12 per cent of women indicating that the recession is to blame for their inability to afford fertility treatments such as IVF.
Sam Baker, editor-in-chief of Red magazine, said: "This report provides an incredible in-depth view on the effect the recession has had on women's baby plans."
Yet the report also shows that many women are not allowing financial barriers to limit their reproductive choices with 94 per cent of women willing to budget for fertility treatments and limit spending in the areas of holidays, pensions, savings, health insurance, clothes and eating out.
