Sheehy Skeffington Human Rights School

Saturday April 28th Liberty Hall (Registration 10 am)

A one day school providing an opportunity to discuss human rights approaches to achieve the fundamental freedoms and entitlements that contribute to the development of a Good Society.

The School takes a human rights and social justice perspective in seeking to connect and address issues that are common to community organisations, political and social advocates and civil society organisations - such as social exclusion, gender inequality, racism and discrimination, global disparities and the denial of fundamental freedoms. The School wishes to broaden and share economic, community, legal and political frameworks of analysis through which people can pursue these shared goals.

The School takes place in the lead up to a number of important events - the centenaries of the 1913 Lock Out, the Easter Rebellion of 1916 and the formation of the First Dail in 1919. These events put down key pointers and indicators of the national aspiration, especially in the 1916 Proclamation and the Democratic Programme of the First Dail. This period also saw the creation of the Irish Women's Franchise League by Hannah and Francis Sheehy Skeffington and Margaret Cousins which challenged the subordinate status of women in Irish society. Speakers:

  • Senator Ivana Bacik
  • Law Lecturer/Barrister Donncha O'Connell
  • Community Activist John Bissett
  • Historian Mary Cullen
  • Economist Michael Taft
  • Human Rights Activist Aideen Gilmore
