Survivor of Gaza Freedom Flotilla to address NWCI AGM
Published: Thursday, June 10, 2010
The National Women's Council is delighted to announce our guest speakers for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 18 June 2010.
They are Ewa Jasiewicz and Freda Hughes, both of them feminists who are deeply engaged in the struggle for justice for Palestine.
Ewa Jasiewicz was on board one of the ships in the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, when it was attacked in international waters at the end of May by Israeli commandos. Nine people were shot dead. Ewa was brought to an Israeli prison and then deported to Istanbul. She is a journalist and trade union organizer. She has worked with the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine and with Voices in the Wilderness in Iraq. As a Free Gaza coordinator she travelled into the besieged region in December 2008 just in time to witness the horrors of 'Operation Cast Lead' and worked as volunteer with the ambulance service there.
Freda Hughes is a long time Palestinian solidarity activist in Ireland with both the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), of which she is a former chairperson, and the Free Gaza Movement. She has spoken out passionately on behalf of the IPSC in the past fortnight in protest at the Israeli assault on the flotilla. A teacher and educational researcher, she has been National Events Coordinator for the IPSC since 2008.
Please come to the AGM if you possibly can, and otherwise, please send in your proxy votes.
It is vital that you make your voice heard in the Women's Council by taking part in our democratic processes. Make sure you get to European Union House on time to hear these inspiring women talking about one of the most important international issues of our times.
Registration is at 10.30 and refreshments will be served.
The meeting must start at 11am sharp and Ewa and Freda will be the opening speakers, finishing at 11.30.
The AGM will finish at 4.30pm.
AGM open to member of the National Women's Council Of Ireland only.
