The Yellow Wallpaper

Published: Tuesday, October 23, 2012

After a sell-out run at the 2011 ABSOLUT Fringe, Then This Theatre are delighted to bring their critically acclaimed production of The Yellow Wallpaper to Project Arts Centre.

The dark corners of the theatre reflect the dark corners of the mind in this adaptation of the American Gothic novella which charts a young woman's descent into madness during the Victorian era of medical extremes. Trapped in an attic room and cut off from the world, she begins to obsess over the wallpaper, and what's waiting behind it. As she struggles to make sense of its twisting patterns, what she discovers draws her closer and closer to the edge.

Written in 1892 by acclaimed American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The Yellow Wallpaper is a semi-autobiographical novella which wrestles with issues that remain incendiary in contemporary Ireland: mental illness and repressive treatment; marriage and power relations between women and men. The Yellow Wallpaper is a devastating depiction of a mind unraveling which remains as crucial today as is it was the day it was written.
