120 Years of Local Government: We need your stories on the women who played their part

We are looking for your local stories, novels, songs, ballads, photographs, pictures and drawings about women in your local area who have been involved in Local Government. 2019 marks 120 years of Local Government. The enactment of the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898, meant for the first time, women could stand for election and vote.  As we approach local elections in May 2019 and look forward to a breaking new ground in female candidates running and getting elected, we want to make visible the contribution of women over the last 120 years. It might be a family member or you might have old letters, diaries, messages, photographs, membership forms or newspaper clippings. We want to bring together the stories of the past and connect them with our ambitions for the future for the participation of women at local government level.

One such women was Kathleen Clarke(1878-1972). She was elected to Dublin Corporation in 1919 and became the first women Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1939.
