A gender balanced Pensions Council, but we need a universal pension that tackles the gender pension gap

The Tanaiste announced the membership of the Pensions Council this morning and there was some good news; the Council was gender balanced with the appointment of four women and three men. However it is important to highlighted key issues for women which must be considered by the Pensions Council as a priority.
NWCI have been calling for a universal pension since 2008. Women's needs and perspectives in relation to pensions must be an important consideration for the Council.
The Pensions Council will need to recognise and address the gender pension gap and offer real solutions to legacy issues which have left so many older women across Ireland with reduced income along with current issues around care and precarious work which are placing another generation of women at risk of pension inequality.
