NWCI at ARC March for Choice 2016
Published: Sunday, September 25, 2016
NWCI was delighted to join colleagues, memebrs and friends at this year's ARC March for Choice in Dublin City. the march kicked off at the GArden of Remembeance, where men, women and children from across Ireland gathered in show of electrifying solidarity for all those women who have been forced from their home country to travel abroad for an abortion, and for all women in Ireland. Despite the rain and the lack of bus transport in the city, activists from Galway drummed and danced while chanters led the 30,000-strong crowd in mantras such as 'Not the church, not the State, women must decide our fate!' and 'Get your rosaries off our ovaries'.
We marched beside our colleagues in the Repeal the Eightht Coailition, of which NWCI is an active member. We ewre greatly heartened to receive messages of solidarity from our colleagues across the EU, who were also attending demonstrations and promoting a repeal of the eighth amendment from the Irish Constitution.
In the days following, the Repeal the Eighth coalition released a press release expressing their concerns with the Citizens Assembly, calling on the Taoiseach to be sure to consult with a wide range of experts, maintaining a tight timeframe and to appoint the Oireachtas Committee to consider the Assembly’s recommendations now.
