Young Voices for Women’s Equality

Young women and men from across the country will come together tonight to launch The Y Factor, the new National Women's Council of Ireland youth initiative.

Aine Travers, Y Factor Steering Group member said,

'Young people in Ireland have a lot to say about women's equality but their voices are often not listened to. The Y Factor Project is about creating a place for young people to come together, share their experiences and develop their own responses.  We want to show that gender inequality affects all of us and that young people are crucial in finding solutions. '

Gillian McInerney, who is also on the Y Factor Steering Group added,

'We want tonight's event to be a celebration of young people and their thoughts and ideas. We encourage all young people who are interested in issues of women's equality to become involved.  There are lots of ways to do that, either through social media, our new website www.yfactor.ie, in your own school or youth project or by volunteering with us and taking part in planning creative events and initiatives for women's equality over the coming years.'

MC for this evening's launch event will be music journalist Una Mullally. The event will also feature a short film showing attitudes to women's equality and live performances by rap artist Temper-Mental MissElayneous and singer-songwriter Morgan MacIntyre.

The Y Factor project aims to empower and support young people to become leaders for women's equality. It works with young people through schools, youth groups, young feminist organisations and via social media platforms. The project is being steered by a diverse group of young women. It is a three year project funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies.
