A leading golf club was last night accused of enforcing 19th century rules after it won a legal bid refusing women full membership.
The Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by the Equality Authority and ruled by a majority of three to two that Portmarnock Golf Club in north Dublin was a gentlemen's club where golf was played.
It was not "discriminating" against the Equal Status Act by banning women from joining.
Portmarnock general manager John Quigley said the club was pleased with the decision.
