The National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI) joined PACUB (Parents Against Child Unfriendly Budget) at Leinster House this morning to hand over 15,000 signatures to An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen T.D, opposing any cuts or changes to child benefit.
'The National Women's Council is delighted to join PACUB today to strongly oppose any cuts to child benefit in the upcoming budget. The NWCI is in total agreement with PACUB that child benefit should not be cut, means-tested or taxed in the up-coming or future budgets,' stated Orla O'Connor, NWCI Head of Policy, following the handover.
'The Government would do well to listen to the voices of 15,000 people across the country, along with many others who vehemently oppose any changes to child benefit,' she continued. The NWCI praises PACUB's efforts to mobilise parents and others around the country in opposing cuts that will have disastrous effects on families, who are already stretched financially.
Through PACUB's petitions and activities, parents have had an outlet to voice their anger and disgust towards any moves by government to target families. PACUB's campaign has been hugely successfully and the NWCI is happy to continue its support of their efforts.
