NWCI to celebrate women’s leadership to mark International Women’s Day 2006

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. This year, The National Womens Council of Ireland (NWCI) will hold an event to celebrate the leadership of women in Ireland.

Speaking ahead of this mornings event, Deputy Chairperson of the NWCI, Marie Hainsworth, spoke about the relevance of International Womens Day in todays world; International Womens Day is an opportunity for ordinary women from around the globe to appreciate the value of their own contribution to history this is relevant for women young and old, from all societal groups.

Today, here in Ireland, many women are still struggling for better pay and work conditions, accessible childcare options and access into the decision-making arena, continued Ms Hainsworth, and we still need to unite together to address issues facing us all. International Womens Day gives us this opportunity to come together.

The event: Celebrating Womens Leadership will see the recently appointed Irish Young Global Leader, Caroline Casey acting as Chairperson and sharing her experience of a young woman in leadership. Caroline is the founder of the Aisling Foundation and the 02 Ability Awards.

A diverse and inspirational panel of speakers will join Caroline; representing women in leadership at local, regional and national level here in Ireland.

Todays event will be one of celebration and inspiration. We hope that a message of hope and encouragement will go out to our members and women in general that will help to validate the work of the NWCI and give us some perspective for the future she concluded.
