Experts from Ireland and Iceland came together at our seminar 'Bearing the Brunt? Women and the Recession' on 8 October 2012 to highlight the different impact of the recession on women.

Dr Ursula Barry and Dr Pauline Conroy presented the key findings of their research paper Ireland 2008-2012 Untold Story of the Crisis – Gender, Equality and Inequalities. Our international guest from Iceland Thora Thorsdottir talked about her country's experience of using gender as an important factor in informing political solutions to tackle the recession.

The presentations were followed by a panel discussions with Tom Healy, Nevin Economic Research Institute (NERI) , Helen Johnston, National Economic & Social Council (NESC) and Laurence Bond, The Equality Authority.

On the occasion of the seminar the NWCI called on the government to protect women's equality in the upcoming Budget 2013 and to put equality at the centre of its approach.
