Equal but Different - NWCI and HSE will launch new Report
Published: Monday, November 05, 2012
Join us for the launch of a new report that will change the way healthcare is provided to women and men in Ireland. Minister of State for Health, Kathleen Lynch T.D. will launch the publication 'Equal but Different: A Framework for Integrating Gender Equality in Health Service Executive Policy, Planning and Service Delivery' on 14 November 2012.
Women and men have different health needs throughout their lives. Unequal economic and social roles in the workplace, in the home or in public life between women and men may lead to unequal access to healthcare and healthcare outcomes. However, healthcare provision in Ireland has so far been gender blind. This new report aims to make gender an important factor in healthcare policy and provision. It promotes gender mainstreaming as a way to improve service delivery, make better use of resources to address the needs of women and men, save on long term health costs and lower the burden of ill health.
The report is the result of a unique collaboration between the National Women's Council of Ireland, the HSE, the Men's Development Network, Men's Health Forum in Ireland, the Equality Authority, the Institute of Public Health Ireland, the Department of Health and the Irish Cancer Society. The report was written by Dr Jane Pillinger, Independent Consultant and Policy Advisor who has undertaken extensive research and policy analysis into the area of health inequalities and women's health.
