Family’s concern for Bahrain women jailed for playing revolutionary songs

The family of a woman in Bahrain, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for playing revolutionary songs, are concerned for her health.

Fadhila Al Mubarak, who is 38-years-old, was convicted in May at a secret military trial. The woman has ovarian cysts which risk growing cancerous without regular medical attention.

However, the Bahrain Society for Human Rights says that the prison has no permanent nurse or visiting doctor and that conditions are poor, with some cells having no windows and none having chairs. Inmates share just six toilets and showers.

Al Mubarak was stopped at a checkpoint in March and arrested for playing revolutionary songs on her car's audio system. She attempted to pull a security official out of the driver's seat after he took her place there, fearing he would take away her child and nephew who were also in the car.
