NWCI applauds Government’s decision on women representatives

The National Women's Council of Ireland applauds the government's decision to tackle our appalling record on women's representation in the Houses of Oireachtas. The announcement that political parties are to lose half of their state funding unless at least 30% of the candidates they select to put forward for election are women, is great news for the Women's Council and many others who have campaigned long and hard for such change. "We commend Minister Phil Hogan's swift and decisive action in proposing this radical move, and we look forward to working with the political parties to help them to implement the changes which will be necessary to turn Ireland into a full democracy at last," said Susan McKay, chief executive of the Women's Council. "We will continue to work with our members and allies to ensure that women put themselves forward for selection."
