NWCI expresses disappointment at the cancellation of Global Village

The National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) today expressed its disappointment at the news that Dil Wickremasinghe’s Global Village on Newstalk had been cancelled.
Orla O’Connor, Director of NWCI said,
“Dil Wickremasinghe has always been a huge supporter of NWCI, and her Global Village programme was a great space for important discussion on gender equality issues for NWCI and our members. Global Village was a unique show, one which championed issues such as ending domestic violence, the need for affordable childcare, and closing the gender pay gap. At a time when Newstalk is being criticised for its gender imbalance, it is regretful to see Dil’s show being cancelled. The station must do something to address its gender imbalance.”
Orla O’Connor continued,
“Every year, NWCI runs #FemFest, a major conference by young women, for young women. A key part of #FemFest is the media training the young women receive to empower them to speak out on issues of inequality. Dil Wickremasinghe always supported these young women by giving them a space on her show, to hone their skills, and shine a spotlight on the issues that matter most to them. Dil is a powerful advocate for feminism, and a strong role model for young women, and she is a big loss for Newstalk.”
