The National Women's Council of Ireland has joined the age of YouTube with an exclusive new poem by renowned poet Rita Ann Higgins. "The Darkness" is a hilarious and penetrating look at Ireland's current economic chaos and is featured on the newly launched NWCI website. "The National Women's Council is excited to be engaging with new audiences through new social media. We want the website to become an important resource for those who visit, but we also want visitors to enjoy it and be stimulated by it" said the director of the National Women's Council of Ireland, Susan McKay.
Blogger of the Year, 2009, Maman Poulet, aka Suzy Byrne launched the NWCI's new website this week. "I blog because I can," she said. 'For the NWCI, a website which reaches out to all its constituencies and promotes the role of members organisations and the impact of policy on women's lives is now vital. In a recession, with threats to important services and dismissal of issues as being irrelevant, I'm delighted to see the organisation adopt new forms of communication.' She said the web had been important to her as a woman with a disability. "It got the mouthy me out there, entering into debates all over the world."
A representative of the Irish Deaf Women's Group told the launch that the web was a "fabulous means of access" and that she would encourage her group to look into and use the new NWCI website.
