The National Women’s Council of Ireland mourns the loss of one of Ireland’s most respected and admired feminists. Ní fheicimid a leithéidí arís!
Orla O’Connor, Director of NWCI said: “It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Marian Finucane. We express our deepest condolences to her family and friends. Marian Finucane paved the way for many women in broadcasting and put a spotlight on so many key social issues of the day. May she rest in peace.”
Ellen O’Malley Dunlop, Chairperson of NWCI said: “Marian was a role model for so many, young and old. She was a deeply respected and much admired broadcaster. In recent years Saturday and Sunday mornings between 11 and 1 were must listen to shows. You trusted her and she never disappointed. From an early age Marian had an instinct and the courage to shine a light on the many injustices in our society. From her days as a student protester to when she first became a programme presenter at RTE, she demonstrated her concern for contemporary social issues, especially those concerning women, in the groundbreaking Women Today programme. This was to be the beginning of a life long journey to uncovering the many inequalities and difficulties that affected the daily lives of the women and men in Ireland. Our sincerest sympathies go to Marian’s husband John and to her son Jack and her extended family. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dhilís.”
