The Irish Cancer Society and the National Women's Council of Ireland are delighted to announce a seminar on the growing crisis of women and smoking.
The number of smoking related diseases in women is reaching epidemic proportions with more women now dying from lung cancer than breast cancer. More than half of disadvantaged women aged between 18 and 29 years of age smoke, which is twice as high as the rate in non-disadvantaged groups.
The objective of this free seminar is to explore why women are smoking and what can be done to address this crisis. We have a number of esteemed speakers joining us on the day to discuss various topics including:

Health Inequalities in Ireland Today

  • Ms Sinead Pentony, Head of Policy, TASC

Women, Smoking and Inequalities

  • Dr Jude Robinson, Reader in the Anthropology of Health and Illness, Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology, University of Liverpool

Marketing Tobacco to Women

  • Professor Amanda Amos Professor of Health Promotion, Centre for Population Health Sciences, University of Edinburgh

Health Effects of Smoking

  • Dr Finbarr O'Connell, Consultant Respiratory Physician, St James's Hospital, Dublin
