Women’s rights in conflict situations -  NWCI conributes to setting up monitoring group

Published: Tuesday, January 15, 2013

The United Nationals Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR) was the first formal and legal document from the United Nations Security Council that required parties in a conflict to respect women's rights and to support their participation in peace negotiations and in post-conflict reconstruction. It calls for the adoption of a gender perspective that included the special needs of women and girls during repatriation and resettlement, rehabilitation, reintegration and post-conflict reconstruction.

In November 2011 the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) launched Ireland's National Action Plan. As part of the objectives of the plan a Monitoring Group has been set up to oversee progress on achieving the objectives, actions and targets in the NAP and to keep up to date on emerging issues and related policy agendas in women, peace and security so as to revise existing objectives or formulate new ones. DFAT invited the National Women's Council of Ireland to nominate three people from its membership to represent NWCI on this Monitoring Group with expertise on areas related to UNSCR 1325. The persons selected were Siobhan Curran, Pavee Point Travellers Centre, Salome Mbugwa, Akidwa and Shirley Graham, Hannas House. The Monitoring Group is chaired by Liz McManus and other organisations represented on the Group include Irish Aid, Joint Consortium on Gender Based Violence, Amnesty International, the Defence Forces, An Garda Siochana and the Department of Justice. NWCI hope to keep you updated on progress being made on Ireland's National Action Plan over the coming year.
