Invitation to Community Platform event
Ireland has a national target to reduce ‘consistent poverty’ to 2% or less by 2025. The Community Platform believes this official target does not go far enough.
Our latest report, What Would it Take to Eliminate Consistent Poverty by 2030?, calls on the Government to commit to eliminating consistent poverty by 2030 and outlines the necessary steps to do so. It is possible to eliminate consistent poverty by 2030, but it will require a high level of political commitment and policy measures adequate to meet this challenge.
Drawing on the collective expertise of our members – 31 leading organisations in the community and voluntary sector – this report identifies the groups most commonly in consistent poverty; provides key insights into the root causes and structural reasons for consistent poverty; and identifies solutions that would eliminate consistent poverty.
The launch event will feature:
The report’s author, Dr Nat O’Connor, who will present an overview of the report’s key insights, proposals and recommendations;
A discussion panel of Community Platform members, representing a cross-section of the groups most likely to experience consistent poverty, who will discuss the practical ways in which poverty can be eliminated;
An opportunity for attendees to respond to the report, and discuss the Platform’s proposals for eliminating consistent poverty.
Ahead of the new Dáil term, Budget 2025, an impending General Election, and the development of the next national anti-poverty plan, this is a critical moment to press for the elimination of consistent poverty to be a political priority.
Seeking to eliminate consistent poverty by 2030 would say we want Ireland to be a country that leaves no one behind. But this will only happen if society pushes government and officials to make this commitment and take the necessary steps.
