7 Billion People: 7 Billion Actions

On October 31 2011, the earth's population reached 7 billion. This global milestone is both a great opportunity and a great challenge. Although people are living longer and healthier lives, huge inequities persist.

As more and more people join those of us already here, new challenges will arise and solving existing challenges will become increasingly more urgent. Whether we can live together on a healthy planet will depend on the decisions we make now. In a world of 7 billion people and counting, we need to count on each other.

In preparation for this important milestone, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, recently launched 7 Billion Actions, a global movement for all humanity.

The 7 Billion Actions initiative is a collaborative effort involving National Geographic, IBM, SAP, as well as many other private sector and UN partners and civil society organizations, which is calling on people to get involved. It uses new partnerships, technologies and social marketing to spur commitment and action. Individuals, organizations and communities can participate in a variety of ways, from telling their unique stories to carrying out specific actions.
