NWCI at Dublin Institute of Technology Young Women’s Apprentice Day

Published: Monday, March 26, 2018

NWCI participated in Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) Young Women's Apprentice Day on March 15th, getting the chance to meet with lots of soon-to-be school leavers.

With their whole careers ahead of them, the school girls got to meet with potential employers who are now hiring: Bus Eireann, Aer Lingus, ESB, Sisk Builders and many mechanical engineering companies. There are many interesting careers to be had in these areas and with these companies. They also provide sustainable and excellent salaries with amazing travel and promotion opportunities.

Furthermore, these companies are now creating women friendly work practices and environments to work in. Parents and girls are being asked to look beyond traditional female careers of care work/beauty and consider the vast range of apprenticeship opportunities now available for girls.

Initiatives like DIT's Young Women in Apprenticeships are a great way to encourage young women to take on apprenticeships. The Access to Apprenticeship Programme is being developed on a pilot basis by DIT’s College of Engineering and Built Environment in partnership with J.P Morgan and ESB (NWCI group member).

Access to Apprenticeship aims to support the transition of students (16-24 years old) from areas of economic disadvantage into an apprenticeship scheme. Participants start earning straight away with a view to a full salary after 2-3 years.
