Waiting in the never-ending line at the airport, I thought to myself, what did I get myself into? Little did I know that the month of service at the National Women's Council of Ireland would be one of the best experiences, ever.
Sure, I flew over the ocean to intern at the NWCI, but why would I do that when there are countless other organizations in Chicago? Here's why.
The National Women's Council serves the entire country of Ireland. I was based in Dublin, but grew very close to those in Cork, Limerick, and Ballymun after my weekly phone calls to motivate our members to complete the survey that was sent out in March; almost three months ago. Consequently, my experience was more diverse than I could have imagined.
I talked with amazing individuals who apply their heart and souls into their work despite grave uncertainties. I emailed people that work with women from Tanzania and those who serve women on your lane, or the cashier at the market, even teachers who inspire our children. I was in awe of the organizations I met with; they inspired me and it was my honor to stand beside them for a brief moment.
Throughout the survey responses, I realized that many organizations and people are scared for the future. But I'm here to tell you that you shouldn't be. Day in and 
day out you touch our lives. You encourage and motivate women to see the sun rise with a smile; don't forget that. Sure, there's not enough money in the accounts, but there never will be. Yes, the government is making abrasive, unsystematic cuts to our livelihood, but we, as a movement, are still thriving. No, there's not enough participation, but when will there ever be enough?
I completed a variety of tasks for the NWCI, but it was the camaraderie and my colleagues that made this month special. Our tea times in the morning were, as you say, brilliant; something that never happens in Chicago. The solidarity within the Women's Council and throughout the country was unmistakable; again, that rarely happens in the States.
I am still serving the Women's Council as a Survey Consultant and I wouldn't change a thing. Even though I am six hours behind Ireland; I am only a Skype call away. You might even hear from me soon as Surveymonkey has no bounds.
