NWCI pays tribute to Monica Barnes

Published: Friday, May 04, 2018

It is with great sadness that the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) learned of the death of Monica Barnes, a true feminist and supporter of women’s rights in Ireland not just during her political life but all her life.

Orla O’Connor, Director of NWCI said,

“We offer our sincerest sympathies to Monica Barnes’ family on their sad loss.”

“Monica Barnes will be a huge loss not only to her family and friends but also a huge loss to the women’s movement in Ireland. She was a trailblazer during her political career and continued to be a great supporter of women’s rights in her retirement.”

“In 1983 she was very outspoken about her views on the 8th Amendment of the Constitution and she was very disappointed when the referendum to include the 8thAmendment was passed. At the time she predicted how divisive it would become.”

Orla O’Connor concluded,

“Many women who subsequently went into politics after Monica’s retirement would say she was an inspiration to them and that she was a great support to them and that is why they had the courage to follow her footsteps and go into politics.”
