National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI) welcomes the appointment of Noirin O'Sullivan as the first woman to be appointed as Commissioner of An Garda Siochana.
Orla O’Connor, Director of NWCI said
'Commissioner O'Sullivan's appointment is a significant and historic moment for women in Ireland and she presents an important role model for women in leadership in Irish society. All of the leading positions in Justice in Ireland are now held by women, and they are presented with an enormous opportunity to address discrimination against women across Irish society.’
Orla O’Connor continued
'Commissioner O Sullivan's appointment comes at a time when there are significant challenges with regard to the culture and practice within an Garda Siochana, particularly in relation to Violence Against Women, in all its forms. NWCI offer our support to any measures by the new Commissioner to bring about reforms that will lead to greater gender equality within the Gardai and in the treatment of violence against women as the serious crime we know it to be,’
