NWCI call for urgent action to implement HIQA recommendations
Published: Tuesday, June 02, 2015
The National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI) welcomed the recommendations of the HIQA report into Portlaoise hospital but cautioned that urgent action is needed to ensure the recommendations are fully implemented.
Ireland needs a maternity system that listens to the personal needs and wishes of women, one where there is transparency and accountability. The maternity strategy was first recommended following the death of Savita Halappanavar, and is only being acted upon two years later. For women, it is imperative that issues of choice, consent, information and support are front and centre of any overhaul.
NWCI and our members look forward to engaging with the newly established Steering Group, in drawing up a National Maternity Strategy for Ireland before the end of the year.
