NWCI condemns suspended sentence for woman in Northern Ireland
Published: Tuesday, April 05, 2016
In response to media reports that a woman in Northern Ireland received a suspended sentence for procuring abortion pills over the Internet, Orla O'Connor, Director of NWCI said,
"NWCI condemns the suspended sentence for the woman in Northern Ireland. Women in Ireland, North and South, have the right to the highest standard of attainable health. Access to free, safe and legal abortion is an integral part of healthcare and maternity services according to the World Health Organisation. Women must be trusted to make the best choices for their pregnancy and we must respect that choice, including the choice to terminate the pregnancy. No woman should be forced to continue with a pregnancy that she does not want."
