NWCI in New York for the Beijing+20 Commission on the Status of Women

Published: Thursday, March 19, 2015

The UN Commission on the Status of Women meet each year at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

This year, NWCI joined representatives from Member States, International Organisations and civil society across the world for a special 59th session to mark the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, with a focus on the current challenges affecting its implementation and the achievement of gender equality and empowerment for women.

Bringing together women and men from right across the world this session focused on the need for urgent action and increased resources but also sparked serious debate around crucial issues including violence against women, sexual and reproductive human rights, decent work and the future role for civil society, government, the private sector and trade unions.

See our upcoming NWCI blog for more on the highlights and lowlights including an analysis of the formal 2015 Political Declaration which, though it crucially reaffirms Beijing commitments, is seen as weak in many areas.
