Recognising and Challenging our Unconscious Bias
Published: Wednesday, February 17, 2016
A new sample training pack, "Recognising and Challenging our Unconscious Bias", has been launched this month by the National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI).
Developed for the NWCI by Olwen Dawe of Irish Business Intelligence and Orla Leydon of Office and Business Solutions, the module focuses on the benefits to organisations of greater gender balance at middle and senior management levels, which include effective decision making and increased productivity. The module also considers the potential negative implications of failing to address unconscious gender bias in recruitment, promotion and retention policies. Taking a practical case-study style approach, participants are equipped with a greater understanding of unconscious bias and of how to identify and adapt their own workplace culture, processes and practice to promote gender balance.
Available to employers free of charge, the training pack provides a complete set of tools for a half-day training workshop on unconscious gender bias. These include slides, case studies drawn from the private and public sectors, a video, supplementary reading list, trainer's notes and a suggested evaluation sheet.
This project was undertaken by the National Women's Council of Ireland as part of a set of initiatives to support the achievement of gender balance in decision-making carried out in partnership with the Department of Justice and Equality and with Ibec, with generous support from the European Union Programme PROGRESS (2007-2013).
